Freezing Fashion

filed under: Eventistyle

I am quite sure I am not the only one in the city fed up with the freezing cold we have to put up with. Anyone caring some minimum about their looks should find it quite a mission to put together several outfit that are not only warm but alos that don’t make you look like the Michelin Man.

After many winter of struggle I found some balance between style and warmth but I went trough several major failed attempts. I remember I winter in which I thought thermic underwear (aka what I wear to ski) would be the perfect solution. It was perfect- for outside at least as I had completely forgotten about overheated offices, stores, subway and other indoorsy places.
I then went back to my original solution being “half-naked” all winter long, which of course involved being sick all winter as well. Everyone I came across would pride themselves on LAYERING. To which I would always reply that layers didn’t work for me.

I think I am getting it down with a few key items:

  • leggings:  full-footed (check out www.singer22.com for these) and wool are obviously your best bets to go trough snowstorms. NYC is sooo cold right now that I even allowed myself to wear tights (luckily I am single and can be antisexy underneath)
  • boots:I am sadly putting my fancy high heels aside during the cold months and switching to my mountains boots (No Name- love the brand although it is a bit sporty for me…apparently they don’t have a website…but if you stop by Paris their store is located 6 Rue des Canettes). When the weather is not that bad you can still pull out some not too clunky heeled boots.
  • sweater-dress:  these weird length-ed pieces of clothing – sort of hybrid between your ex-boyfriend sweater and a (often mini-) dress. Noticeable fact these are often quite unshaped.
  • Statement belts: to shape the aforementionned sweater dresses and to stand out from the crowd in layers. I just noticed this pretty belt on sale at YOOX perfect to enlighten a dark winter day.
